What Not To Do For Cracks in Brick or Stone Stoops, Steps and Over Garages

Is that cracked brick or stone getting worse and possibly even dangerous? Masonry cracks over garages and on stoops and steps are very common, and usually can be easily repaired. When repaired correctly, this can be an inexpensive process. Often times you may be tempted to address the problem by using caulk. While this may offer a very temporary soloution, it does not correct the problem and is very unsightly. Common problems with using caulk to repair cracks in brick are incorrect texture which actually draws attention to the crack, and when it’s time for a permanant solution is very difficult to remove without damaging the surrounding brick and/or stone and mortar.

When handled properly the first time, this is typcially a $200 to $300 soloution, depending on the severity of the crack(s). So, save yourself the trouble and expense by contacting us for a complimentary consultation. A brief inspection will determine whether the cracks are normal wear, or represent a more complex problem.

Do it yourselfers – You can go to your local brick company with a piece of the mortar. Your salesperson will be happy to help you color match the mortar. However, it is still a good idea to have a qualified masonry contractor assess the crack to identify the root of the problem, ruling out a more serious underlying issue.

We’re happy to assist you with answers to your masonry related questions!
